The New Urban Plan was created to make cities more accessible and sustainable for their increasing populations and the world overtime. Though cities only take up 2% of all land, they generate 70% of the global GDP, consume over 60% of all energy produced, and create 70% of the worlds greenhouse gasses and waste. As urban populations rise, the impact of cities on the rest of the wold will rise as well, therefore it is necessary that we put in place sustainable urban systems that can reduce waste and emissions while still allowing everyone to access the full benefits that a city can provide to them. The plan provides standards and principles for the planning, construction, development, management, and improvement of cities. With its implementation, cities can become sources of global sustainability solutions rather than problems.
